Stories that were not told
Duration: 2 hours

Personal histories and cultural meanings are layered with stories, myths, and sayings that we are told from infancy to adulthood. Natural artifacts tell us stories of time and human relations from another world. Objects and species that share postcolonial histories, as in specimens from far away lands that were curiosities and journeyed continents, now occupy a different place in our contemporary imagination. Often their memory, and original value and purpose has become extinct.

Remembering the Tail Bone

In this work, I lend a subtle mechanical movement to the found objects, to symbolically suggest self-destruction and self-construction through layers of time that are always in flux.

Retenir la terre

Maps tell stories

Of long time forgotten cities

Covered with sand

As the horizon vanishes

And sand dunes disintergrate

We collect horizon abstracts in test tubes

-----

Landslides bring us down

So that we can construct again

In waves we find truth

While castles made of sand, crumble into the sea,

Eventually.

Work from the known, to the unknown

It is the public’s role to attempt to discover what contexts exist and how they came to be created. The excavation involves the removal of topsoil, cleaning, or “troweling back” the surface of the sand until the discovery of edges, which are definable.
